Grand Prix Hermès CSI 5* Goes to Beerbaum & YJC Graduate Chaman

Ludger Beerbaum and YJC Graduate Chaman (Baloubet du Rouet x I Love You) are victorious in Paris.

Chaman placed in the YJC Western League Finals in 2005 as a 6YO with Antonio Maurer. In 2006 he moved to the east coast to compete at WEF with Luciana Diniz before returning to Europe.

April 14, 2013 — The Kaiser came, saw and conquered! But a princess almost stole the show. Ludger Beerbaum’s goal was very clear at the Grand Palais this year; he wanted to make his mark at the Saut Hermès.

That goal meant winning the Grand Prix, “one of the most prestigious Grand Prix on the circuit, if not the most prestigious,” pointed out the German rider. The most successful rider on the circuit is at a point in his career where he is putting the finishing touches to his amazing record by seeking to add certain illustrious titles that have so far eluded him. At the Grand Palais, he had entered just one horse, Chaman, and he only arrived yesterday to allow his fanciful stallion to get used to the specific environment of the venue’s noble glass-roofed nave.

Today, he moved onto the serious business. The first step was to surmount the thirteen obstacles and sixteen difficulties of the initial course. Along with thirteen other riders, he succeeded in doing this with no problems, since the course was not overly difficult. So the jump-off had some serious contenders, with fourteen riders in total. The danger could come from anywhere! Hence his delight, after winning the class with a textbook round:

“I was really pleased with the way the horse jumped today, and the way I rode. I felt as if the horse and I were one. When we are on the same wavelength, it’s a bit like slalom skiing where the transition from one gate to another is really smooth. When the horse is so receptive and responsive, everything becomes easy. Winning is one thing, but to win like that, with a feeling of total empathy, is something that does not happen every day. I’m really happy.”

Peter Breakwell & YJC Graduate Lucas Claim Victory in the $40,000 Blenheim Spring Classic I Grand Prix

San Juan Capistrano, CA – March 30, 2013 - The $40,000 Blenheim Spring Classic I Grand Prix, presented by the Orange County Register, welcomed twenty-two horse and rider participants onto the International Field at the Rancho Mission Viejo Riding Park.  The Peters were in stride today – Peter Cottontail handled Easter brunch for exhibitors, Canadian Peter Holmes set an inviting course and New Zealander Peter Breakwell took home the top prize.

Seven riders piloted their mounts without fault to secure a spot in the jump-off. And of that group only two were double clean, Breakwell and second place finishers Michelle Spadone aboard Tembla (Morgan Hill Partners, owners).  Both of these top riders now call California home.

“My plan was to go fast, I didn’t know if I would be fast enough. But everything just kind of worked out,” explained Breakwell.

John Pearce and YJC Graduate Chianto Make it Two, with Another Win in the $25,000 SmartPak Grand Prix

John Pearce and YJC Graduate Chianto (Carano x Primus AA) won their second Smartpak Grand Prix of the HITS Desert Circuit winter season yesterday. The duo rode to a win in the $25,000 SmartPak Grand Prix, presented by Zoetis, over a star-studded jump-off. ©Flying Horse Photography

THERMAL, CA (March 9, 2013) – It was big and it was fast! Forty-nine horse and rider teams competed for top slots in the $25,000 SmartPak Grand Prix, presented by Zoetis, Friday. Seventeen made the jump-off, with times getting progressively faster and building to a bang as the last pair to take the field, John Pearce and Chianto, knocked it out of the park for the win in 42.68 seconds.

Pearce, who lives in Bermuda Dunes, California, and rides for Canada, was able to shave fractions of a second off the ride that immediately preceded his – a tour by Germany’s Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum and Windward Farm’s Unbelievable in 42.82 seconds, who took second place. Michaels-Beerbaum was also third on Octavia Farm’s Malou, in 44.38 seconds.

It was the second SmartPak Grand Prix win this winter for Pearce and Chianto, owned by Forest View Farm and Allison Moore. The duo won the $30,000 SmartPak Grand Prix, presented by Zoetis, on February 24.

“It was just a great jump-off, right down to the wire,” Pearce said. “I went last, and the times just kept getting faster and faster. When Meredith went before me and was winning I knew I’d have to push as hard as I could.” Pearce’s strategy was to “gallop to the first line, which nobody else did. Out of the gate, I was flat out, and that’s what made the difference.”

(Ed. Note: Chello Z placed 5th in the YJC Western League Finals as a 5YO, & 7th as a 7YO.)

THERMAL, CA (February 12, 2013) – A week of thrilling show jumping competition culminating in the $30,000 SmartPak Grand Prix, presented by Zoetis,  brought HITS Desert Circuit III to wrap Sunday, concluding the first half of the 2013 winter circuit.

The grace note grand prix of Desert Circuit III was a show closer, with a tight contest that had spectators on the edge of their seats as 52 battled it out for the blue. Testing their skill over another scopey, technical course by Mexico’s Florencio Hernandez, five made it to the jump-off, but it was Del Mar’s Josephina Nor-Lantzman, riding her own Chello Z that took the top prize.

The 12-obstacle round one course was as much a test of mental concentration as physical agility and stamina, with some very technical questions. There were 15 jumping efforts, including three doubles and two very tight turns, with a tough line from an oxer at 10 to an oxer-vertical in-and-out at 11 a-b.

Bond and YJC Graduate Wistful Win the Night in the $54,500 HITS Grand Prix CSI-W 2*

Ashlee Bond and Wistful (Grand Star x Polydor) on their way to a win in the $54,500 HITS Grand Prix CSI-W2*, presented by Zoetis, at HITS Thermal with their sights set on a 2013 World Cup appearance. They topped 24 for the win. ©Flying Horse Photography

(Ed note: Wistful finished 9th in the 2009 YJC Western League Finals. She was bred in the USA by Kandi & Rusty Stewart’s Grey Fox Farm. Her sire is the grand prix jumper Grand Star, and her dam is Rusty’s grand prix mare Power Lady.)

THERMAL, CA (February 10, 2013) – Before the start of HITS Desert Horse Park’s $54,500 HITS Grand Prix CSI-W2*, presented by Zoetis, course designer Florencio Hernandez of Mexico said that his goal was to have between one and three clear. He landed on the low side of that projection with no need for a jump-off as Ashlee Bond was the only one to go clean in the first round aboard Wistful.

Riding a California-bred mare owned by her family’s Little Valley Farm, Bond of Hidden Hills, California was one among 24 riders to tour the track. Nayel Nasser of Stanford, California, was the only other rider to finish the course with no jumping faults, but one time fault landed him second place with his own Raging Bull Vangelis S.

The track was huge, with 13 obstacles and 16 jumping efforts set between 1.50m and 1.60m. The scope, combined with some tricky distances and a sequence of very tight turns, was more than most horse and rider teams could master. Many riders had time faults even after the time allowed was adjusted from 77 to 84 seconds.

Victory Marks Triumphant Return for Beerbaum and YJC Graduate Cantano

Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum and YJC Graduate Cantano (Cascavelle x Acord II)made a triumphant return to the grand prix ring this weekend with a win in the $30,000 SmartPak Grand Prix, presented by Zoetis, at HITS Thermal. Team Beerbaum had a great weekend and swept the top three spots. ©Flying Horse Photography

(Ed Note: Cantano placed in the Final of the YJC Western League as a 7YO with Susan Hutchison. The pair went on to place 1-3 in 25 Grand Prix before Cantano was sold to Octavia Farms LLC)

THERMAL, CA (February 4, 2013) – It was a triumphant return to Southern California for Germany’s Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum and Cantano, owned by Octavia Farms, LLC, with a win in Sunday’s $30,000 SmartPak Grand Prix, presented by Zoetis. The pair topped a field of 42 entries and produced the fastest of two clears among eight jump-off contenders.

Indeed the trophy ceremony wound up a Team Beerbaum affair, as student Saer Coulter of Stanford, California, and Don VHP Z placed second with the afternoon’s only other double-clear. Meredith’s husband Markus Beerbaum finished third on Lancero. Both Coulter and Markus Beerbaum’s horses are owned by the Coulter family’s Copernicus Stables.

Stewart currently sits atop the rider standings for the AIG Thermal $1 Million Grand Prix and doesn’t appear to be going anywhere. ©Flying Horse Photography

THERMAL, CA (February 3, 2013) – Speed, scope, strategy and nerve were pushed to the extreme in the $54,500 Strongid® C 2X Grand Prix CSI-W 2*, presented by Zoetis, Saturday night at HITS Desert Circuit II. Ultimately, it came down to a contest of two in which Rusty Stewart of Camarillo, California, prevailed on his Grey Fox Farm entry, Bristol. His contender was Lucy Davis and Old Oak Farm’s Nemo 119. The event, which took place under the lights before a capacity crowd, was the West Coast’s first FEI World Cup qualifier of the winter season and also the first show jumping competition to take place under the banner of Zoetis, the new name of the company formerly known as Pfizer Animal Health. Zoetis will continue to manufacture products such as Strongid® C 2X, Fluvac Innovator® and Quest® Plus.

The Strongid® C2X Grand Prix was a qualifier for both the AIG Thermal $1 Million Grand Prix, presented by Lamborghini Newport Beach, this March and the Zoetis $1 Million Grand Prix that will take place Sept. 7-8 at HITS-on-the-Hudson in Saugerties, New York on Championship Weekend.

Mandy Porter and YJC Graduate Con Capilot (Con Capitol x Pilot) topped a 12-horse jump-off on Sunday to win the $50,000 EMO Grand Prix, presented by Pfizer Animal Health, at HITS Thermal. (Ed. Note: Con Capilot competed in the Young Jumper Championships from 2008-2010, earning top ribbons from WEF to Desert Circuit.)

THERMAL, CA (January 28, 2013) – In a thrilling a contest that came down to the final seconds of the jump-off, the $50,000 EMO Grand Prix, presented by Pfizer Animal Health, brought the first week of competition at HITS Desert Horse Park to a heart-pounding conclusion as Encinitas, California rider Mandy Porter on My Equine Ventures’ Con Capilot snatched victory from Mexico’s Enrique Gonzales on his own Quilebo Du Tillard.

Gonzales sat comfortably in first, but in a dramatic turn of events, Porter advanced to first. She was next-to-last in the ring among 32 starters and last to go in a jump-off that saw 12 advance fault-free past round one of Canadian designer Danny Foster’s course of 13 jumping efforts that included lots of tight turns and combinations.

First up in the jump-off was Gonzalez riding Criptonite, laying down an early Great American Time to Beat of 41.22 seconds. The next two – Helen McNaught of San Ramon, California and her own Caballo, and Tammie Phillips of Stratmore, Alberta and her own Lerche 37 – both upped the ante until Gonzalez returned with a redeeming ride on Quilebo Du Tillard. They ended in second in a time of 40.64 seconds.
